I am so blessed to do what I do because I get to work with some truly remarkable people. People who are striving to be the best they can be. Who have huge hearts and are full of compassion.
And, there's one more attribute that represent my clients; they are some of the most unselfish people I know. I love that about them and I also know that this is one of those attributes that can get them, and other people with the same attribute, into some trouble.
I'm talking about the kind of trouble where you end up forgetting about yourself. Always putting yourself last. Living your life based on the way others want you to. Doing so much for everyone else that you feel moments of resentment or frustration and then feel guilty for feeling that way!
Years ago, while I was a coach in training, I was given a distinction between selfishness and self-interested and I'd like to share that with you now.
Selfish is when you take care of yourself and make time for yourself so you have enough reserves and energy to be there for others when they need you without you ever running on empty.
Self-interested is when you continue take care of yourself without any consideration of using your reserves for anyone else but yourself.
I'll leave you with this quote by Oscar Wilde and hopefully, between the distinction I just shared with you, and his quote, you'll find yourself spending a little more time on you, if that's missing in your life.
"Selfishness is not living as one wishes to live. It is asking others to live as one wishes to live."
